As such the Trust has completely transformed its staff induction process, developing a unique programme in January 2014 that focuses on embedding its culture and values into the hearts and minds of staff.

Supported Computerised Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (cCBT)

There has been a significant increase in the size of the NHS workforce at Central Manchester Foundation Trust (CMFT) over recent years, and a subsequent increase in demand for individual counselling and psychology sessions. As a result the time spent waiting for an appointment has also increased for staff. As one response to this situation, the Staff Support Service at CMFT undertook a pilot project to deliver guided computerised cognitive behavioural therapy (cCBT), with facilitated support, to individuals with anxiety and/or depression.

Using Simulation to Assist in the Reduction of Drug Errors and Improve Patient Safety

In 2013 the clinical skills and simulation team at the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust (PAHT) reviewed their existing training package regarding medicines management. Concerns were raised when some members of staff, who had made drug errors on the wards, were merely referred back to the same theoretical session they would have had previously. Impact evaluations revealed that existing theoretical sessions alone did not identify and challenge poor practice or reflect the drug errors happening in clinical practice.

Developing a Specialist Respiratory Placement for Student Nurses

East Lancashire NHS Trust’s Integrated Respiratory Service (IRS) has developed a specialist ten to twelve week placement for student nurses, which allows students to gain clinical experience in a specialist nursing role, rather than within a traditional ward or outpatient setting.Trainees gain an understanding of the specialist respiratory nursing role as well how that role works alongside other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Trust pioneers new apprenticeship scheme

Healthcare Science Apprenticeships The scheme created by Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber to develop a new training route for Bands 2 - 4 in Healthcare Science. Apprentice medical laboratory assistants, Rachel Taylor and Nathan Baldwin, work for laboratory medicine while Amy Bond and Amy Martin have been assigned to both Neurophysiology and Cardio-Respiratory in a brand new apprenticeship role.

Effective Management Medical Rotas using a Rota Co-ordination Team

The Rota Co-ordination function was devised to provide effective management of Medical rotas using a rota co-ordination team to minimise costs and maximise service. Through centrally managing the day to day rostering of Junior Doctors, efficiencies could be achieved in locum spend and optimising the cover levels with the available staff. Monioring the cost savings made by the rota team and have identified for the period April 2012 to 2013 a total of £581,000 savings across the seven directorates.
