Human Book Club for Healthcare Learners

A Human Book Club event was held to help student nurses and Trainee Nursing Associates
gather evidence for the communication section of their portfolios. The Human Book Club
provided an opportunity for healthcare learners to get a better understanding of how an
individual’s culture, social identity and expressed beliefs impact on the choices they make
about their care and treatment.

Placement Retention

Health Education England identifies the need to improve retention in commissioned pre-registration courses. Research locally and nationally indicates the importance of the placement experience in reducing attrition. The North West is home to a wide range of good practice in this area and this page hosts examples of some of the great work from both the HEI and service provider partners.

Case studies in the series:

Overseas Recruitment Project

Since 2008, the Diagnostics Division of Pennine Acute had experienced a high turnover of middle grade anesthetists   and had difficulty recruiting enough UK or EU nationals to fill the resultant vacancies. Therefore the Trust enlisted the support of Hays Recruitment Agency to undertake an overseas recruitment project in India, successfully filling all the required roles.

Equality & Diversity Inclusion Unit

The 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust set up an equality and diversity inclusion unit, providing support to staff, service users, carers and stakeholders on patient and public involvement, equality and diversity and social inclusion. This supported the Trust in building a diverse workforce which reflects the communities it serves and in promoting an environment characterised by dignity and mutual respect.

Values Based Competency Interview Questions for Clinical Roles

In 2012, The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust rolled out values-based competency interview questions for recruitment to clinical roles. These were developed by the Human Resources (HR) Department, to support recruiting managers and help ensure that new recruits exhibit and share the Trust’s five core values; caring, dignity, respect, openness and pride. These core values were developed by the staff in order to localise the NHS Constitution and provide the guiding principles that underpin everything the Trust does.

NHS International Conference - Recruiting for the Values of the NHS

This international conference, chaired by Michelle Beecroft from Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, was designed to inform delegates of some of the challenges healthcare providers face around embedding key values, exploring the approaches used in America, New Zealand and Australia over the last 20 years to overcome such challenges. Furthermore consideration was given to the tools currently in use or in development within the UK.

Keynote Presentations:

STEMTECH Careers Event

The careers event was held to showcase career opportunities in Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM subjects). The event provided an opportunity to showcase NHS careers in STEM subjects and in particular Apprenticeship opportunities that are being currently advertised in Pharmacy, Healthcare Science, the Ambulance service and Dental Nursing. Opportunities in all these disciplines will be advertised in the next few weeks and the majority of these Apprenticeships are planned to start September 2015.

Barriers to career development for black and minority eithnic NHS support workers

Since 2002 NHS North-West has provided support workers with the opportunity to undertake assistant practitioner training subject to available posts and success in the selection procedures. Although 25-30% of support workers identify as BME, their representation on the Trainee Assistant Practitioner programme is less than 2%.
